- Galadriel

Meaning: ‘Woman of the Trees’ [dialect: Sindarin]

Gender: Female

Race: Elf

Home: Lothlorien

Hair: Golden blonde

Eyes: Blue

Appearance: Tall, usually clad in white with a silver circlet in her hair

Weapon(s) of choice: n/a

Father: Finarfin

Brother: Finrod

Husband: Celeborn

Daughter: Celebrían

Grandchildren: Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen

Fic(s): DV and BDD

History: Galadriel was one of the many elves who left Valinor at the end of the First Age in pursuit of the stolen Silmarils and eager for the destruction of Morgoth. She thus earned for herself permanent exile in Middle Earth. She met and wedded Celeborn and together they ruled over the Golden Wood of Lothlorien, aided and protected by Nenya, the Ring of Adamant, which Galadriel wielded. They had one daughter, Celebrían, who married Elrond of Rivendell, and later Celebrían’s daughter Arwen would spend most of her time in Lorien with her grandparents. Eventually Morgoth was defeated and many of the few surviving exiles were granted permission to return to Valinor, with the exception of Galadriel. As Sauron, Morgoth’s successor, began to rise Lothlorien became secluded as the elves there tried to insulate themselves from the growing evil in the world. It was Galadriel who called together the White Council to discuss what ought to be done about this new Dark Lord. For her own part, Galadriel was now the only one of the original exiles left in Middle Earth, and the most powerful elf remaining east of the sea. She possessed many skills, especially of foresight, and with her mirror she could remain vigilant from afar.

MC Bio: Galadriel first met Aragorn when Gandalf brought the young man to Lorien to be healed of some recent injuries from an orc attack. While in Lorien Aragorn begged that she use her skill to help confirm or disprove a dream he’d had that indicated his friend Legolas was in danger. Galadriel willingly granted his request, seeing even in so short a meeting the courage, strength, and steadily growing wisdom in the future king. It left her with no doubts that her son-in-law had adopted a fine son, and that her granddaughter had bestowed her love well. Later, when Aragorn and Legolas were taken by the Witch King, Galadriel also confirmed Elrond's fears, telling him that she could not see Aragorn's future anymore. After the War of the Ring, during which Galadriel aided the Fellowship of the Ring and also firmly rejected the temptation of the One Ring itself, she was at last granted permission to return to Valinor.

- Gandalf the Grey

Other Names: Mithrandir (meaning: ‘Grey-wanderer’ [dialect: n/a]), Tharkûn (meaning: n/a [dialect: Khuzdul]), Icanus (meaning: n/a [dialect: Haradrim]), Olorin

Gender: Male

Race: Istari, Wizard, or Maiar

Home: Everywhere, and a few other places

Hair: Grey

Eyes: Blue

Appearance: Elderly, with a long grey beard, bushy eyebrows, and a pointed, wide-brimmed hat

Weapon(s) of choice: Magic staff, sword

Fic(s): Vilya, SS, CoA, AstE

History: Gandalf was one of five wizards to be sent from Valinor to help combat the Dark Lord Sauron in Middle Earth. Upon Gandalf’s arrival in the Grey Havens, Círdan the Shipwright foresaw that he alone would fulfill the task the Istari had been set and he gave to him Narya, the Ring of Fire, to help him in his work. When the Lady Galadriel summoned a council of the Wise (called the White Council) she requested that Gandalf oversee it, but he declined on the grounds of not wishing for his constant travels to be confined. Through his journeys Gandalf became quite familiar with the doings of Middle Earth, taking interest in the hobbits, the Rangers of the North, the dwarves, the men of the South, and the elves. He made only a few good friends; one being Bilbo Baggins the hobbit, another being Gwaihir the eagle, and another being Lord Elrond of Rivendell. Joined both by their common battle and their shared burden of the elven rings they carried, Gandalf and Elrond understood each other well and the wizard’s stops in Rivendell were frequent. It was in the Last Homely House that Gandalf met a man who would eventually be one of his greatest friends and allies - Estel, known to men as Aragorn, the future king.

MC Bio: Possessed of a deep wisdom and a quick sense of humor, hidden within a gruff shell, Gandalf had set himself to work as soon as he had reached Middle Earth. With his fellow wizard Saruman already beginning to plot against him, his task was doubly difficult. Though farsighted Gandalf failed to see his friend’s duplicity until it was almost too late. Gandalf had met Legolas Greenleaf many times, and had seen the young Estel as he was growing up, but he did not begin to know either of them very well until they began to have adventures together. At that point the wizard was repeatedly called on to help the pair of friends out of danger’s way (jail and barrow wights included), and in return was often helped by them. Gandalf gained a fondness and respect for the man and elf - a good opinion that would carry on for the rest of his stay on Middle Earth. After the War of the Ring, Gandalf returned to his original home in Valinor, his labors ended.

- Gimli

Gender: Male

Race: Dwarf

Home: Erebor, the Lonely Mountain

Hair: Russet brown

Eyes: Blue

Appearance: Average height (for a dwarf), long beard, and leather and chain mail armor

Weapon(s) of choice: Axe

Father: Gloin

Uncle: Oin

Fic(s): PT and AstE

History: From the beginning Gimli was a stout-hearted dwarf with all the stubbornness, blunt humor, war-like spirit, love of stone, and dislike of elves that could be expected of his race. Since his father, Gloin, had been one of the twelve dwarves to accompany Thorin Oakenshield on his quest to retake Erebor, Gimli’s family was a prestigious one. Therefore it was Gloin who brought tidings from Erebor to the Council of Elrond and Gimli was selected to accompany him. It was the beginning of many changes in the dwarf.

MC Bio: During the Council Gimli first met Aragorn, the future king of men, and Prince Legolas of Mirkwood. To say that the first meeting, particularly between the dwarf and the elf, was difficult would be an understatement. Towards the end of the Council Gimli volunteered to accompany the Fellowship of the Ring to Mordor, thus finding himself permanently in the company of Aragorn and Legolas for the entire course of the War of the Ring. At the end of it their many adventures served to draw them together as very close friends. Among other things Gimli managed to cure Legolas of his long-standing phobia for caves, and also became an honorary uncle of Aragorn’s children. When Eldarion, Aragorn’s eldest, was kidnapped while in the company of the dwarf, Gimli initially blamed himself for the disaster. In the end, however, it was chiefly due to Gimli’s presence that the boy was rescued and Aragorn’s and Legolas’ lives saved. Eventually, when Legolas built a ship to carry he, Aragorn and Arwen to Valinor, Gimli accompanied them.
