Race: Dwarf
Home: Moria
Hair: White
Eyes: Dark
Appearance: Elderly with a long white beard
Weapon(s) of choice: Axe
Father: Fundin
Brother: Dwalin
Fic(s): Return andSeventh Stone
History: Balin was originally raised in Moria, but his father was slain by orcs in the Battle of Azanulbizar and the dwarves were driven from their mountain halls. Balin went on to serve the various exiled kings of Erebor faithfully, including Thrain II until his disappearance into the dungeons of the Necromancer. Afterward Balin served Thrain's son Thorin Oakenshield, becoming one of his companions (twelve dwarves and one hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, in all) on his quest to retake Erebor from the dragon Smaug. When Thorin perished in the Battle of Five Armies Balin continued his service to King Dain in Erebor until he grew restless to return to his old home. His brother did not go with him.
MC Bio: Taking many dwarves with him, Balin returned to Moria and began to work the mines again. Though in comparison with many dwarves Balin was mild mannered in his ways and ready to make friends when they proved themselves worthy of trust (as the hobbit Bilbo had done), he nevertheless was also a shrewd and courageous ruler. When the two exiles from Mirkwood, Aragorn the Ranger and Prince Legolas, came to him with information on the newest group of orcs to trouble his gates, he willingly accepted their help. Later, when they again came to his gates, he was able to repay their services in full, sealing the friendship with Aragorn -- though perhaps not so much with Legolas. Some time later, unbeknownst to the two friends, the orcs of Moria again rose up and Balin and his dwarves were killed. He was laid in a stone coffin within the mines he had loved.

Elladan and Elrohir like visiting and sharing his excellent honey-cakes with the Beorning despite the fact that he was so cantankerous, and he enjoyed being with them despite the fact that they are so lighthearted. Several years later Beaoma took on an apprentice, Pejor, to 'keep him young' since the twins were not often able to visit him. It was shortly after this that his village was attacked by orcs and he and Pejor, along with several other beornings, were taken prisoner fortunately, Aragorn and Legolas were able to track them down and with the help of Beaoma in his bear form, they were able to dispose of the orcs and save the prisoners.

Fic(s): CoA
History: Bilbo was the son of a pair of extremely well-to-do hobbits and he inherited from his parents both a splendidly furnished hobbit hole and a comfortable lifestyle. It was with the appearance of Gandalf the Grey that Bilbo suddenly found himself on a dangerous journey across Middle Earth, and a great many unusual character traits (for a hobbit, at least) were revealed. On that journey Bilbo retrieved a powerful ring that could make him invisible and he was instrumental in helping Thorin Oakenshield and his twelve dwarven companions retake Erebor from the dragon Smaug. After witnessing the Battle of Five Armies, and making for himself fast friends in Rivendell, Erebor, and Esgaroth, Bilbo and Gandalf returned to Hobbiton in time to prevent the auctioning of Bilbo’s possessions (a premature sale based upon his presumed death). Both Gandalf and the ring would one day affect Bilbo in even more powerful ways, but for the time being the hobbit was content to write about his adventures and dabble in the arts of history, poetry, and the elvish language. He spent a great deal of time in Rivendell, perusing old books, and there he briefly met a young human boy by the name of Estel.
MC Bio: Bilbo next met Estel on a journey through the Breeland. The hobbit had heard rumors of wights loose on the Barrow Downs and was on his way to apprise Lord Elrond of the situation when he came across a Elrond’s twin sons, Prince Legolas of Mikwood, and a contingent of Rangers, including Estel, who introduced himself as ‘Dúnadan’. It was with the aid of the hobbit that the group of elves and rangers were able to draw the false wights into the open, and through the time he spent in company with them Bilbo began to discover clues to Estel’s true identity. Before they parted ways, Bilbo jotted down a poem for the human which Aragorn (as was Estel’s true name) attached to his name ever after. During later years, after the War of the Ring, in which his nephew Frodo played the chief part, Bilbo and Frodo traveled over the sea to Valinor.
